What prompted you to get into mortgage lending?
I had worked for Dick Cranston Ford, a family owned and operated dealership, for 14 years helping their clients obtain financing for automobile purchases through local banks and Ford Motor Credit. When the family decided to sell the business, I decided it was time for a change. A friend suggested that I consider residential mortgages. They thought that the knowledge I had about credit and qualifying for auto loans would be beneficial to clients looking to finance home ownership.
How long have you been in the industry?
I have been assisting clients with the purchase or refinancing of homes since September of 2000. Licensed in RI, MA and CT, I have helped countless people realize their dream of home ownership. Originating mortgages with Home Point Financial allows me to take excellent care of my clients, and referral partners. Home Point's “we care” philosophy is evident in everything we do. What is the biggest piece of advice you would give today’s buyer as they prepare for the mortgage process?
I think the single best piece of advice I could give a home buyer, is that they need a true pre-approval before they start looking at homes. A pre-approval includes all the steps of a full approval except for the appraisal and title search. If a buyer is dealing with a lender that issues a pre-approval without reviewing at a minimum 2 years of federal tax returns, most recent 30 days’ worth of earnings and 2 months bank statements, then they might not be qualified, or not qualify for as much as they were told. That can lead to unnecessary expenses and heartbreak. In 17 years I have met a lot of people that did not qualify for one reason or another when we first met, whether it was credit, income, assets, etc., but I worked with them to make it a reality in the future.
What is most rewarding and what is most challenging about today’s market?
I love meeting home buyers and explaining the mortgage process to them. I pride myself on the education that I provide to help them with one of the biggest financial decisions they will make in their lifetime. My goal is to always paint a clear picture of what to expect and communicate clearly what will be required. Buying a home should be a joyful, exciting experience. If everyone knows what to expect it can alleviate a lot of unnecessary stress.
In today's market buyers are faced with a lot of competition. That makes a true pre-approval that much more important when it comes to negotiating. I always encourage the buyer’s agent to tell the listing agent to call me, so I can explain in detail how I arrived at issuing the pre-approval letter.
What are your hobbies and passions outside of work?
When I am not assisting clients achieve their dreams of homeownership I love spending time with Family and friends. Golf is a big part of my leisure time and I never miss a Patriots game. I do a lot of volunteering for my Home Owner’s Association and I am a volunteer for the Kent Washington Board of Realtors where I serve on the Education Committee.
